Description
The sacred heart is a popular image among many cultures. I was inspired by the many beautiful images of the sacred heart that I have seen reproduced in jewelry, in sculptures, and in tattoos, to name just a few examples. Each pillow cover is made up of appliquéd arrows, flowers, leaves, and some have fabric Lotería cards. The stems are hand embroidered. The fabrics are appliquéd in place with various types of machine stitching. All of the fabrics are 100% cotton. After all the designs are appliquéd, I quilt the background using the free-motion quilting technique. I added beads to add interest to various parts of the design.
The bold colored heart is surrounded by flowers and leaves. The stems are hand embroidered and there are beads sewn onto the red heart and onto some of the flowers. I added the El Pajaro Lotería card which came from some Lotería fabric I bought years ago. I am very happy with the placement of the Lotería card on the flowers and stems. The pale blue polka-dot background fabric and the deep blue fabric border are from my collection of Kaffe Fassett fabrics.
The pompoms are handmade in Chiapas, Mexico, and carefully stitched in place.
The opening in the back is envelope style. Each piece is signed on the back. The pillow insert is not included, but you can purchase an 18” square pillow form from many locations.
